DAY-1

Lecture 1 -19/06/2012

Expectations:

I was never interested much in HR as a subject although it is a very important part  as it is manages the man power but I always found it ‘boring ‘ even though never worked in an organisation but have heard from cousins and friends . Even before the lecture started I was wishing  that the  lecture ended ASAP.
Then Mr T.Prasad  oops!!!!  Mr T. Mandi   entered with this smile and enthusiasm that was least expected. After a few introductions from his side he started talking about music especially Pink Floyd -Another Brick in the Wall. Then later he showed us the video of the song... …  an inspirational song that instead of being just another ordinary person in an ordinary world try being extraordinary well I felt the song was a bit extreme but the main point or message to be conveyed was fulfilled.

    Mona Lisa Smile
While watching the video  I remembered the movie Mona Lisa Smile starring Julia Roberts in which she portrays an history professor  Katherine Ann Watson who when in her teaching career realizes that the students have memorized the whole book before-hand hence she tries teaching them modern art with discussions their own perspectives which is shunned not only by other professors but also by other professors and superiors but also her students. But later the students realized her true intentions but it was too late Ms. Watson was already asked to leave along with her beliefs and worldly views .

Dead Poets Society: I have not seen this movie except the last part (all thanks to youtube.com)  where the students get up on their chairs and say ‘O Captain My Captain ‘ which actually glimpsed front of me . Even this movie talk about a professor trying to teach out of the box but still failed to convince the orthodox and was kicked out !!!
Basically when someone tries to teach put of the ordinary he is shunned but that day I met a professor who enjoyed teaching out of them box and still following the old fashioned method.

Concepts :
We were taught that (a+b)2=a+2ab+b2
But we were never taught how it was derived . I would like to thank  Mr. Mandi for teaching how cubic equations are derived to the whole class because I had personally had a very bad experience in one of the GD/PI of one of the most elitist B-School , I was asked to show how (a+b) was derived but I was unable to and I was feeling so ashamed of myself that since then I have decided to go to the root and not superficial knowledge.Later I started learning how an area of a circle and perimeter is derived , why is it called area under the curve - Integration etc.

Aaj ki roti Aaj hi kamao

Pay  for yourself and today not rely on someone else. We may be just students especially me, I just graduated and then directly and MBA hence I never got a chance to work but when sir emphasized I realized he never meant work under someone he meant work for yourself, put up a business, become innovative, don’t just become an employee but an employer.
Hence Mr Prasad prefers being called Mandi as he holds an event called ‘Mandi’where students go out in the streets and sell items and ‘learn and earn’
My dad always wanted me to get to have a start- up: a website but I never showed any interest, never ever  but after that class and few days of pondering I  realized may be I was wrong , well there is no harm in trying , unless you  try you will never understand what you missed. Hence after that I decided that I would help my dad with the start-up along with my younger brother (who is very interested not because of the money or fame but just for the fun).
I solemnly swear that next time in the Power of Ideas - Economic Times I will participate , no matter if I do not get shortlisted but I do not want to have the feeling of not trying.
Hence : Thank you Mr. T Prasad Oh sorry I mean Mr Mandi for showing me to be an employer and not an employee.

Lecture 2 -19/06/2012

Now we had started the proper subject about management.

One important thing I learnt was that :
Management is not about guessing, one needs to have a proper set of goals in front of him.
And those goals must have the SMARTER characteristics

Specific Measurable Attainable Realistic Time-Bound
And then Evaluate and Re-valuate
Hence to prove show this concept we were given wooden cubes and then asked that how long a tower could we construct, many made random guesses and then later constraints were put then people got the tower height guesses down.

Then three were given a challenge to build one- blind folded and using the other hand and other guiding but no touching the cubes and one who played the role of top management could only make rare entries. This building block game went for a long time nearly an hour an half but still all the students cheered and didn’t let the builder lose his spirits- basically customers will always support the organisation to make a better product !!!!

                                                                  Initial Product

Final Product - After sheer determination and never ending spirit  from the builder and support from audiences
