Trust - How important it is in an organisation !!!

Valley Crossing

Have you ever wondered how much trust is important among peers in an organisation ??

Let us discuss with an example

This is a classic example of trust , co-ordination, teamwork and proper division on work.

Let us consider step by step

Now consider
Step 1: Here all three are safe
Step 2:First one is half safe and middle and last full safe
Step 3: First is full risky , middle and last safe
Step 4: First and middle - half safe and last is safe
Step 5:First and last safe and middle is fully risky
Step 6:First is safe middle and last half safe
Step 7:First and middle are safe and last one fully risky
Step 8: First and middle full safe and last half safe
Step 9: All are safe

So what do you observe from the above scenario -all the three people went through the same phase as other, no one has been more safe or more risky. All have gone through same risks as other.
All have same roles and are responsible equally towards the completion of work.

In the beginning one must feel that crossing such a valley must be an impossible task and if these 3 men were thinking to cross it they certainly must be idiots but with proper planning , appropriate division of labour and most importantly trust and co-ordination

A Small Seed Which Grew Into A Beanstalk

A small seed which grew into a beanstalk
Ever thought whether a small concept could grow so large that it would change the entire education system where providing a free world-class education to anyone anywhere would be a reality.
Yes it is true
The Khan Academy which was conceptualized by Salman Khan - MBA from Harvard Business School and in the annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
It was a small idea where he tried to teach hi cousin math over a telephonic conversation using a Yahoo   Doodle notepad. Then he thought why not make videos and upload them on Youtube.com which is free for everyone to access. Students from around the world have been attracted to Khan's concise, practical, and relaxed teaching method he started using  softwares and  which would actually behave like a virtual teacher who would grade them with badges and earn points.
Search for anything from K-12 , science, maths and even humanities - finance and history you will find it.

They have a simple mission - We're a not-for-profit with goal of changing education for the better by providing a free world-class education to anyone anywhere

Theory X and Theory Y

Theory X and Theory Y represent two sets of assumptions about human nature and human behavior that are relevant to the practice of management. Theory X represents a negative view of human nature that assumes individuals generally dislike work, are irresponsible, and require close supervision to do their jobs. Theory Y denotes a positive view of human nature and assumes individuals are generally industrious, creative, and able to assume responsibility and exercise self-control in their jobs. One would expect, then, that managers holding assumptions about human nature that are consistent with Theory X might exhibit a managerial style that is quite different than managers who hold assumptions consistent with Theory Y

Mr. Khan left his job as a hedge fund analyst and became a educator more like he became after being a successful visionary.
He thought that each and every student deserves to get a proper education hence instead of continuing his high paying job he went along to educate students in a way he wished he got tutored

Business models

Since Khan Academy is not-for-profit organisation it still needs money to thrive on carry out its activities to reach its goals, it receives donations from Reed Hastings (CEO of Netflix) , Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Google.

Well considering a business model it would be wrong to say that it follows a business model as it is a non-profit organisation similar to wikipedia although the khan academy is similar to Freemium but here it is free of charge for all and no catch !!!

Organisation
They have a wonderful team of engineers and implementation team where they try to rrealize what would be feasible for kids and I mean all types of kids ie abled and differently-abled kids.
The creative ones make the website very user-friendly and keep them learning !!!!
They may be having a small team of full time workforce but have hundred thousands volunteers who support via either teaching personally in own countries like it is been done in India or online help

So basically if your work is good and for the betterment of others people will come to provide support, if one sees that most of the full time team members are experts from the top Universities and have worked in world class companies but still have left their high-paying jobs have come to provide support because they do not only gain goodwill but also the satisfaction of providing education to kids who can't afford school and places where there are no schools like in Africa especially the third world countries there are few schools and most of the time these countries are busy fighting the mob or get involved in gang-war.
So places like these kids can't go out much.Hence offline videos have been distributed in remote areas of Africa, Asia and Latin- America

So truly Khan Academy has reached every part of the world only to create a more educated world

DAY-1

Lecture 1 -19/06/2012

Expectations:

I was never interested much in HR as a subject although it is a very important part  as it is manages the man power but I always found it ‘boring ‘ even though never worked in an organisation but have heard from cousins and friends . Even before the lecture started I was wishing  that the  lecture ended ASAP.
Then Mr T.Prasad  oops!!!!  Mr T. Mandi   entered with this smile and enthusiasm that was least expected. After a few introductions from his side he started talking about music especially Pink Floyd -Another Brick in the Wall. Then later he showed us the video of the song... …  an inspirational song that instead of being just another ordinary person in an ordinary world try being extraordinary well I felt the song was a bit extreme but the main point or message to be conveyed was fulfilled.

    Mona Lisa Smile
While watching the video  I remembered the movie Mona Lisa Smile starring Julia Roberts in which she portrays an history professor  Katherine Ann Watson who when in her teaching career realizes that the students have memorized the whole book before-hand hence she tries teaching them modern art with discussions their own perspectives which is shunned not only by other professors but also by other professors and superiors but also her students. But later the students realized her true intentions but it was too late Ms. Watson was already asked to leave along with her beliefs and worldly views .

Dead Poets Society: I have not seen this movie except the last part (all thanks to youtube.com)  where the students get up on their chairs and say ‘O Captain My Captain ‘ which actually glimpsed front of me . Even this movie talk about a professor trying to teach out of the box but still failed to convince the orthodox and was kicked out !!!
Basically when someone tries to teach put of the ordinary he is shunned but that day I met a professor who enjoyed teaching out of them box and still following the old fashioned method.

Concepts :
We were taught that (a+b)2=a+2ab+b2
But we were never taught how it was derived . I would like to thank  Mr. Mandi for teaching how cubic equations are derived to the whole class because I had personally had a very bad experience in one of the GD/PI of one of the most elitist B-School , I was asked to show how (a+b) was derived but I was unable to and I was feeling so ashamed of myself that since then I have decided to go to the root and not superficial knowledge.Later I started learning how an area of a circle and perimeter is derived , why is it called area under the curve - Integration etc.

Aaj ki roti Aaj hi kamao

Pay  for yourself and today not rely on someone else. We may be just students especially me, I just graduated and then directly and MBA hence I never got a chance to work but when sir emphasized I realized he never meant work under someone he meant work for yourself, put up a business, become innovative, don’t just become an employee but an employer.
Hence Mr Prasad prefers being called Mandi as he holds an event called ‘Mandi’where students go out in the streets and sell items and ‘learn and earn’
My dad always wanted me to get to have a start- up: a website but I never showed any interest, never ever  but after that class and few days of pondering I  realized may be I was wrong , well there is no harm in trying , unless you  try you will never understand what you missed. Hence after that I decided that I would help my dad with the start-up along with my younger brother (who is very interested not because of the money or fame but just for the fun).
I solemnly swear that next time in the Power of Ideas - Economic Times I will participate , no matter if I do not get shortlisted but I do not want to have the feeling of not trying.
Hence : Thank you Mr. T Prasad Oh sorry I mean Mr Mandi for showing me to be an employer and not an employee.

Lecture 2 -19/06/2012

Now we had started the proper subject about management.

One important thing I learnt was that :
Management is not about guessing, one needs to have a proper set of goals in front of him.
And those goals must have the SMARTER characteristics

Specific Measurable Attainable Realistic Time-Bound
And then Evaluate and Re-valuate
Hence to prove show this concept we were given wooden cubes and then asked that how long a tower could we construct, many made random guesses and then later constraints were put then people got the tower height guesses down.

Then three were given a challenge to build one- blind folded and using the other hand and other guiding but no touching the cubes and one who played the role of top management could only make rare entries. This building block game went for a long time nearly an hour an half but still all the students cheered and didn’t let the builder lose his spirits- basically customers will always support the organisation to make a better product !!!!

                                                                  Initial Product

Final Product - After sheer determination and never ending spirit  from the builder and support from audiences
